Touch of Evil (1958)
Should I see it? Yes – for at least five minutes. This is a great film – if you love film. Most people will probably do best by watching the amazing opening sequence and then turn the thing off. Following the entrancing opening shot, the narrative in Orson Welles’ troubled work loses its pacing and drones on. Welles was fired as director after this piece was recut. Both the older version and the revamped Welles’ approved (posthumously) version tend to lose their steam in the middle. This is an influential film, to be certain, however I doubt most people will be entertained by it.
