The Shining (1980)
Should I see it? Yes! One of the most effective horror films of all time. Jack Nicholson is perfectly cast as Jack Torrance, a failed writer and drunkard who descends into violent madness while overlooking a possessed mountain resort during the off-season. Master director Stanley Kubrick is at the top his game and provides an frightening and impressive work. Based on Stephen King's novel, this film will guarantee to get you spooked. I totally agree! I worked for a summer in Yosemite National Park and gave tours of the history Ahwahnee Hotel out there. I had numerous guests ask, "Is this where they shot The Shining?" I finally decided to investigate. I found that no, the movie was not shot there, but while the exterior of the hotel was actually a lodge at Mt. Hood, the interior - actually a set in London - was based off of the Ahwahnee Hotel. I decided that this was a close enough relationship to the hotel I was giving tours of that I needed to watch the movie. I don't like horror films - strike that, I hate horror films - and I really liked this movie.
