THE CARNIVAL OF CINEMA: EPISODE XXIX – DAYS OF WINE AND BLOGGERS
| Welcome to The Carnival of Cinema. Each week we present the best in movie reviews, film commentary and industry advice. If its about cinema, you’re going to find it here. I’d like to thank Gracchi from WESTMINSTER WISDOM for hosting the carnival last week. He did a great, click here to go to his edition. Gracchi will start us out this week with his review of Scarface. We’re not talking about Al Pacino’s screaming epic but rather Howard Hawk’s “Shame of the Nation” film starring Paul Muni as Tony Camonte. If you like movies about criminals, here’s more… Thomas has a review of the Smokin’ Aces. Lots of guns, lots of blood, lots of stylistic shots. Head over to ANONYMOUS X for more. Enough of criminals, let’s talk about Billy the Kid. Next we have AGNES VARNUM'S look at Billy the Kid. This documentary doesn’t speak to the infamous gunslinger but rather a teen saddled with Asperger's Syndrome. Agnes fires back at a review from Variety’s John Anderson. This is an interesting retort. First time Carnie, Yascha Mounk believes that American cinema needs to make works of propaganda like the classic film Casablanca. In a time when there is so much confusion, perhaps a little nudge in the right direction is needed. Click over to A EUROPEAN VIEW for the post. Welcome aboard Yascha. Another first timer here at the Carnival of Cinema is FincherFanatic. As it turns out, FincherFanatic happens to be a fanatic for all things Fincher – David Fincher that is. Check out FincherFanatic fantastic site THE WORKS AND GENIUS OF DAVID FINCHER for links to an interview with David Fincher from Film Comment (1999) and links to a series of interviews he’s done to promote Zodiac. FincherFanatic also has a correction for those who think Fincher is responsible for the trailer for Gears of War. If you’re a fan of Gears of War Jim Dorey has a big treat for you. Head over to MARKETSAW: THE FUTURE OF FILM... to get the latest on the treatment for this film (possibly hitting the theatres in 2009). Stephanie of RANDOM ENCOUNTERS OF WE gives good treatment to Disney’s latest release Meet the Robinsons. Heading over to MCF’s NEXUS OF IMPROBABLILITY, MCF meets nobody. Actually he meets a whole gaggle of nobodies. If you’re not into the nobodies MCF’s hanging with you have to admit they’re heads and shoulders above the bigots Alexius is talking about. Alexius reviews American History X over at TOPMOVIES. There is part of one line from the post that troubles me: “…I admit that this movie is quite old, it came out in 1998…” 1998 is old now? I’m feeling like a geezer all the time now as it is. If we’re casually throwing around that 1998 is old, you may as well just push me off on my ice floe. Anyway, head over to TOPMOVIES for more. If you have the need to see more cinematic skinheads, check out This Is England, starring Thomas Turgoose. Taking place in 1983, a loner gets harassed by a mess of the bald meanies. Matthew Sinclair has a thoughtful review of this look and some thoughts on the final scene of the piece over at his site SINCLAIR’S MUSINGS. Next is next with a single sentence movie review by Clay Mabbitt on SINGLE SENTENCE MOVIE REVIEW. You can say a lot with just one sentence. For multi-sentence reviews, check out Paul McElligott’s work. Just think, Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O’Connor, Donald Sutherland, Harry Dean Stanton and Captain Stubing all in the same film. Kelly’s Heroes gets the business over at CELLULOID HEROES. Moving east, Tom Yum Goong (Warrior King for UK release, The Protector for US Release, Honour of the Dragon for European release) has a sequel coming (well maybe its not a sequel but at least a strong likeness.) Conan Stevens has the lowdown on his site CONAN STEVENS - WORLDS BIGGEST ACTION HERO? Conan has another site named ACTORS AND ACTING INFORMATIONAL BLOG. There you can find all kinds of useful industry advice from a working actor. This time, Conan argues for and against those who are thinking of trying their hand at being a movie extra. For more industry advice, another great site to look at is DIGITAL FILM CREW. This week, Jason Hooker speaks about film festivals and events. If you have a film, its time to get them submitted! To end the edition, I’d like to introduce the first review of the big release this week. Matt Adcock beats the pack by coming out with his review of Spiderman 3. Trust me, there will be more next week. Click on the link to be taken to DARKMATTERS - THE MIND OF MATT. …and CUT!…and PRINT! Thanks to everyone for their great posts. Have an opinion or article about the film industry? Have you reviewed a film or DVD? Have any tips on breaking into the biz? Send submissions HERE! Great job. Except that Billy the Kid doesn't have ALS. It's Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism, and it doesn't really enter the film as a diagnosis at all. It might be better to just describe Billy as "unique" and let people meet him without any other labels.
I've made the correction you've cited. I will have it in the post however. I understand your impulse to use sanitized words and be comforting but Having worked in the mental health field, I don't think it does anyone any good to ignore diagnosis. Saying someone has Asperger's Syndrome isn't a label, its a fact.
