THE CARNIVAL OF CINEMA EPISODE XV: DUDE, WHERE MY CARNIVAL?

Welcome to the Carnival of Cinema, the web’s best collection of movie reviews, commentary and industry advice. We return home this week after sending the Carnival off to its first road trip. Thanks to The Neurophilosopher for handling The Carnival last week. He did a fantastic job.

Let’s jump right into the fray.

If you like movie reviews, you’ve hit the jackpot.

We’ll start off this week with the golden child of Indian cinema.

Prasad of SCREENART recommend’s star director Maniratnam’s latest film Guru. This film about fictitious business tycoon Gurukant Desai stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai (who Western audiences may have seen in Bride & Prejudice.) If you don’t know who Mani Ratnam is, Prasad will get you interested in seeing his work.

We roll on with more films getting top honors and great reviews. The Oscar season has officially opened and the nominations are out.

Émigre thinks that Guillermo del Toro’s El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth) got shafted at The Golden Globes. It’s up for a spate of Oscars as well, is it destined to always be the bridesmaid and never the bride? Click over to EMIGRESTUDIO.COM to read the review.

More Oscar contenders get their due this week.

The Children of Men is up for three awards including editing, cinematography and best-adapted screenplay. EMPTY NEST’S Maureen gives her views on this recent release that stars the mumbling Clive Owen.

Maureen likes the story, Margaret is another story altogether.

Margaret Minnick of MOTELMAG.COM has also seen Children of Men and may be wondering where this best-adapted screenplay honor is coming from. Get both sides of the argument and check out both reviews before you see the film.

Leonardo DiCaprio took time out of his busy schedule flying around the world, burning fuel on big jets and cars, and using up countless more resources while whining the rest of us are ruining the environment and got himself an Oscar. I wonder if Mr. Do As I Say (Not As I Do) will skip the proceedings until The Academy holds the show by candlelight and the statues are made out of hemp, glue and cardboard?

Take a gander at this quick review of Blood Diamond by Arun over at ARUN IS BRINGING YOU...YOUR DAILY REMEDY. Arun also provides a list of must-see films if you’re looking for films about race-relations.

Here’s a shocker, Mel Gibson’s flick some nods from The Academy. Apocalypto made the grade for sound and editing. Certainly Gibson himself can think of some sounds he’s made he’d like to edit.

ANONYMOUS_X doesn’t have a review of Apocalypto but he does have a review of a review of Apocalypto. Well, he mentions the review at least. Head over to his site to read more.

And the Oscar goes to…that big ape in the third row.

Looking back to last year, Paul McElligott reviews King Kong. Winner of a number of Oscars including, I believe, best achievement in creating a wholly unnecessary remake. The extended version of this film that already drones on for six hours has been released. McElligott has the review over at CELLULOID HEROES.

Keeping with the awards routine, there’s Stefanie’s review of the award winning* Stranger Than Fiction over at her site RANDOM ENCOUNTERS OF WE. Read her review of this film and then find her quick kick in the knees to My Super-Ex-Girlfriend. Apparently, she didn’t care for that one too much.

* - Technically, winning an NBR Award makes a film “award winning”.

Stephanie isn’t the only one who has sat through Uma Thurman’s latest cinematic turd.

Jason was forced to suffer through My Super-Ex-Girlfriend as well. Look to RANDOM SUPER HEROES to read more. Now everyone in the whole world who has seen the movie has expressed their opinion.

The great Gracchi of WESTMINSTER WISDOM is back this week with a look at Abraham Polonsky’s 1948 crime film Forces of Evil. Gracchi always has interesting posts and this week is no different. That said, this has to be the most obscure title he’s ever written about.

If you’re going to review films you may as well try to review all of them.

Over at MCF's NEXUS OF IMPROBABILITY, MCF reviews the films he’s viewed and lists the best of the best and best of the best he’s seen. It makes more sense when you read the post. Head on over and see how many you’ve seen. I’ve seen 177 of the 202 listed (I can’t get myself to sit through Nashville. Altman’s stuff is terrible.)

To close things this week we go to DAKRMATTERS – THE MIND OF MATT to see that Matt Adcock has an interview with Rocky …er, Sylvester Stallone. After reading the post, all I have to say is “Pearl of the Cobra?” What kind of name is that?

…and CUT!…and PRINT!

Thanks to everyone for their submissions. Another great week of posts.

Do you have an opinion or article about the film industry? Have you reviewed a film or DVD? Have any tips on breaking into the biz? Send submissions HERE for next week’s edition. Be the first blog on your street to post in the Carnival of Cinema.
