ELF (2003)
| SHORT REVIEW: Will Ferrell once again shows true talent. Finding projects that are firmly set well below his immense skills. It is obvious that John Favreau is a talented director and is capable of making funny movies. It appears from this production that he was simply mismatched with his material. There is some inspired casting, Will Ferrell as an elf from the North Pole and Bob Newhart as his sheepish, adoptive elfin father. The premise itself is solid: a human raised by elves at the North Pole leaves the only home he has known (Santa’s workshop) to go to New York to find his birth father. With this going for it, this film should have been a hit. It isn’t. The film doesn’t have the laughs or charm to sustain it. This is a forgettable film, which is a shame. If it was made up to its potential it would have been unforgettable. Next December save your change and skip this one. Rent The Christmas Story or Scrooged and you’ll be the better for it.
